Seriously, considering our current judiciary system, that is probably the biggest impediment in
the progress of people with disabilities right now. Our laws are currently weak, and large companies
typically have powerful legal teams at their defense. I think that's the bigger challenge
for PWAG right now. I do agree with Zando's comment that it shouldn't stop us (those who build sites)
from trying to make them more accessible though. The basics aren't all that complicated
practically speaking and most guidelines are clear enough to implement.

It's easy to see why large online businesses in the US or Europe can be concerned about
accessibility: they can get sued by individuals or advocacy groups and based on
several precedents, plaintiffs have actually won.

Sad to say but it's true. Many companies are really just spending on accessibility
based on the calculated risk of a potential lawsuit.

Guys, I just received this message posted on PWAG's e-group. I copy-pasted it here. It's about PWAG's new Online Evaluator.

Good news! Our fellow member, PWAG's Internal Auditor and multi-awarded web designer Arielle Cruz has recently developed the first ever PWAG's Online Web Accessibility Evaluator. He did it in less than two weeks. This is still in beta stage so expect some minor glitches on the results.

What this evaluator is does NOT:
1. It does NOT validate a document against any Document Type Definition.
2. It does NOT check the document for X/HTML well-formedness.
3. It does NOT validate a document against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines versions 1 and 2 checkpoints.
4. It does NOT check the entire site, only individual pages.
5. It does NOT check other PWAG's recommendations requiring manual or subjective evaluation (i.e language easy to understand, descriptive links, etc.)

What this evaluator does:
This evaluator only checks your webpage based on PWAG's Web Design Accessibility Recommendation (soon to be the Philippine standard). It specifically checks on the following:

Under PWAG's Maturity Stage 1 -
1. Access Instruction Page (most likely Accessibility Statement or simply Accessibility link)
2. Using "Click here" or "More" links
3. Using ALT text on images
4. Using PDF files without equivalent HTML
7. Use of Flash animation

Under PWAG's Maturity Stage 2 -
1. ALT text does not exceed 80 characters
2. HOME link
3. SiteMap link and page
4. Skip to content link
5. LABEL tag on forms
6. Relative FONT sizes
7. SEARCH form

Please go to this link, enter your URI and see the result.

Green color means passed while red means failed. The evaluator is still incomplete. So we encourage web developers who are familiar with Javascript to download the script and make some necessary improvements.

I checked the site which I designed. Maraming kulay red! hehehe

Oops sorry, I made a mistake with the url. Please use this. Thanks. :-)

So how is PWAG going on right now? and how to be a member?

Their site is butt ugly and not user friendly though.. come on you can create something simplier and more professional looking than that. :P

PWAG joined the Philippine Web Design Conference last July 10. I saw their presentation. They even presented awards to Disabled Friendly Websites. At the PWDO Tweet, Mr. Rene Orense put a link on photos of the Disabled-Friendly Website Awarding at the FFC 2009.
